ECOLOGY - New projects with Montenegro and Albania

On the 20. October 2010 ChargoNet signed a new consortium agreement with two companies, one from Albania - the company named Uegen Ltd. and one from Montenegro - the company named Medix Ltd. The reason for signing the contract is to cooperate in the ecology project named: Sustainable development to prove the efficiency concerning implementation self-sufficient constructed wetlands on different geographical areas.

ALBANIJA: With one in four of its 3.2 million people living in poverty, Albania is one of the poorest countries in Europe. Even today, 40% of Albanian households lack basic education, heat and sanitation; fewer than 50% in both rural and urban areas have access to safe and clean drinking water. Furthermore Albania’s political and economic transformation has brought about increasing demand for water. Urban areas are growing rapidly, and more drinking water is needed. Advancement of tourism in coastal areas—an important element of Albania’s strategy for economic growth and poverty reduction—requires larger amounts of drinking water, but water shortages and the absence of sewage treatment hampers tourist development. In rural areas, the creation of private family farms as a result of restructuring of state and collective farms has altered and complicated the use of water for irrigation by adding many discrete users.' (World Bank Report Albania)

MONTENEGRO is a small, open, middle-income economy. Total GDP is approximately $2.4 billion and GDP per capita of just under $3,900 is remaining well below recent EU members except for Bulgaria (World Bank report Montenegro). In recent years limited progress can be reported on water quality even though a Law on Water Management and Financing was adopted. In spite of some progress, the degree of alignment to the Drinking Water Directive remains very low. Alignment with European standards needs to be improved substantially. Further efforts are required to improve implementation and enforcement (Montenegro 2009 Progress Report).
